MY OVERALL REPORT BASED ON MY PERSONAL ASSESSMENT ABOUT ABIA STATE ORIENTATION CAMP July 26th-August 15th , 2017.
You don't need to fight me on this.... Am only talking from my own personal and humble experience on the camp.
"Camp Abia: The first camp in Nigeria", as it is popularly called, is really one of the camps to be for the compulsory three weeks Nysc orientation course. Not just because she is the first on the list of NYSC camp, but she also possess some beautiful features that it's worth talking about.
Before i went for service, trust me, i have heard lots of terrible stories from many people. Even from those that have never being to the gate of any camp. They told me a book-full of different "Faboos". lol....
I heard about the terrible lifestyle on camp; the maltreatment corpers receive from camp soldiers; the sickness and lots more. Am very sure you heard the same stories too, or perhaps you will soon hear them.
My deployment to Abia state did not give me enough opportunity to confirm if those stories are really true, but what i know is that Camp Abia is the contrary of it all. So don't be annoyed if you passed through all those horrible experiences as we were told. Let me give my brief reasons why i will recommend Abia state for any prospective corp member to consider including in their 3 choice of Service.
1) Perfect Location
Abia state camp is located in Igbere, Umunna, Bende Local government of the state. The location of the camp is perfectly figured out to eliminate every stress and inconvenience any stranger may encounter in locating it. Unlike many camps which are located in the urban area of the state, Abia camp is located away from heavy traffic. So even if thousands of prospective corp members decided to travel down there on same day, traffic will never be a problem. "The sky is wide enough to contain thousand birds at a time".
2) Easy Access to Water
This is a very important factor to consider when ranking Nigeria camps. If you think that's a lie, you better ask people that served in camps like............ they will tell you how important water is to corpers over one thousand in number.
The water supply in Camp Abia was okay.
On 27th of July (Night), their was disastrous thunderstorm @ 10:25pm which damage two summour pump and a Lister Generating Set....
The State Coordinator in Person of Mrs. Francesca Ifon marvels at this occurrence saying she has never seen this type of thing before during her speech the next morning, which made her call for an SOS arrangement, and water tankers was used to distribute/supply water in d stationed reservoirs around.
Some group of Corp members who are Geologist and Mechanical Engineers came together, worked as a team...fixed the two summours and the lister generating set and Every corper always have their fill. To wash, to drink, and to take their baths. One of the Corps member was given letter of recommendation on 14th August for a service to the camp.
3) Food
Camp Abia food is not the "Oh my God" type of food. It was fairly okay. They don't absolutely go for indigenous foods like some other camps will do. The only one i could remember eating on the camp is Garri (Eba). Which i don't think its too strange as such for any Nigerian youth.
4) Security👮🏻♀👮🏻♀👮🏻♀
The security👮🏻♀ on this camp is 100%. You have nothing to fear while on the camp. Ranging from the terrible insurgency to the least expected insurgents.... Mosquitoes. You are completely save from them all....(by fumigation) I must say this .. Mosquitoes is 100% dead in the camp. So for those batch that are coming, you don't need mosquito net.
I must commend the Camp Commandant, Major A.I Jauro, The RSM, Armman A., and the rest of the paramilitary forces e.g( Baggio, Oloboisir(10platoon), Emmanuel, Abudulahi,Tope) etc. for ensuring tight security of lives and d entire camp from the arrival day to the day we passed out.
While on Camp Abia, you can sleep with your two eyes closed😔 without the fear of a thing.
5) Health
I must commend the Federal Ministry of Health for their help and support. Medical Consultants, Nurses and Midwife from the ministry synergize and worked with the Medic corp members.
Though their were several emergencies but their was no loss of life.
I must commend the Camp Clinic (Agomoh-Ogbonna C.(Mrs) and the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia and the entire Medics in camp for prompt intervention during emergencies and distress calls. Not forgetting the corps member who assisted them.. Red cross Volunteer members... They are all just Perfect... No casualty was recorded in the Camp.. What a testimony.
6) Hospitality👩🏽⚕👨🏽⚕
Camp officials on the camp treats the prospective corp members as their own children.
I commend the State Cordinator, Mrs. Francesca Ifon, The Camp Director, Mrs. Goody-Ekezie V.N, and entire NYSC officials for their humility, humanitarian and selfless service to we the corp member s. They really sacrificed convinence to serve us better. They won't permit maltreatment from any soldier👨🏾✈ or camp officials.
I can't for one morning at the parade ground the rain was drizzling so hard, the camp director have to dismiss us, various corps member were so happy praying for further occurrence, though it comes, but we are ask to use the multi purpose hall....
7) Good accommodation is on ground for corpers to rest their heads.
At Abia camp their are good hostel facilities for both Corp members and Officials, Not the type that you will need to support the windows or matress with mats or your kaki. But a comfortable one to have good dreams of better Nigeria.
Chaiiii I love those halls, most especially Ochendo X2 hall.. Full of fun...all time. Not forgetting our hostel governor In person of Nnamdi... 3 hearty cheers... Hip hip hip....hurray...
Also has a multipurpose hall, a medium size pavilion, a medical centre, a camp court, serveral Administrative offices, a modern kitchen, NYSC Stores Department, and a big Parade ground, a camp market (Mammie market).
Mammi market traders are also everything to write about. They don't over-inflate their prices beyond normal, and are really helpful in running your little shores for you.
If you want to really confirm these things i have said, consider choosing Abia state and enjoy, not only the Camping life, but also the after-camp experience on the streets of Abia State.
Still Obeying The Clarion Call!
